What are people's final opinions about the paging file and virtual memory in Windows XP? i.e. what should they be set to according to your amount of ram?
I installed XP in January and went through the two guides at www.tweaktown.com. Are these ALL valid tweaks for XP to help improve stability and performance? I also went through the various panels in the retail version of Tweak-XP (not the free MS one), and used its various fixes and tweaks. It does a lot of stuff "automatically" that makes me wonder sometimes if its really helping my system or not.
I'm specifically using mt PC for professional audio. I run lots of software and have already noticed considerably less performance than Win98se, though I suppose most articles on XP have said that anyway. For reference, my setup is a bit more simplified compared to others around here - Celeron2 566@850, P3B-F, 384mb ram @ cas2, Seagate CudaIV 80gig, GF2MX, SBLive, Professional audio card (Echo Mia), linksys network card.
I guess I'm just curious if there are any major XP tweaks that the tweaktown article and the Tweak-XP software have missed, specifically considering the paging file / memory tweaks these programs recommend.
On a side note, I would like to mention that this tweak on how to get various XP software to show up in the Add/Remove did not work. I don't use MS Messenger, Outlook, Frontpage...I'd like to get rid of them, but you can't selete the folder. I get something like "It is being used by another person or program....close them and try again"
