My computer died and I hear that windows Vista will be comming out sometime in 2006, rumors i've heard are that it will be out in 6 months. I dont know weather it is a waste of time to rebuild a computer using XP again or wait until windows Vista is released.

What do you think I should do?

Just my opinion......but I would wait until Vista has been out long enough for all the bugs to become appearant. Maybe even until it has it's first SP. There's nothing wrong with XP. XP is prolly the best and most stable windows yet and I will still be loading machines with it long after Vista is even out. Now I myself will prolly get a copy just out of curiosity and angst, but you definately will not go wrong with XP. Besides, if ur machine is down now, you need something to run till Vista is out, right? I usually completely reformat mine every 4-6 months anyway. I would definately put XP backk on it and then when Vista is out, start watching the reviews for a more educated decision.

If MS gets lucky it will be out by next Christmas.

Do you need to use computer again? If not, you can wait until after Vista comes out. :)

Use XP. Vista will need time to get the bugs removed even after it is released.

Depends on the type of person you are. Can you handle bugs and new things? I'm an early adopter, so i'll be getting Vista as soon as i can get my hands on it. I did the same with W2K and XP.

Go with XP Pro.
Wait on Win x64, 1 year.
Consider Linux.
Wait on Win Vista, 2 years.

Here's a thought. Rather than buying XP now, then Vista in a year or so, you could try out a few Linuxes until Vista comes out. Who knows, by then you may have no interest in Windows!

As many folks here will tell you, my advice is to wait until the new OS has a service pack. Then go for it.

Of course if you're the experimenting type, you wouldnt even be asking for our advice. ;)

XP Home and Pro should be supported in "Full Support Phase" until December 31st, 2008. Microsoft was thinking of extending it too. I would at least wait for Vista's first Service Pack.. cause knowing Microsoft, it will have a crapload of security vulnerabilities that will be discovered in the first 6 months :p

If you buy a copy of XP home now, you'll soon be getting screwed.

XP Home has a different support lifecycle than Pro. It is scheduled to go into extended support at the end of this year. Although, I'm betting that date will be extended.

Any old way, get XP unless you don't plan on getting a computer until next winter. That is when Vista will be a shipping product... ;)

Ahh I didn't know they were seperate. That is kind of dumb of Microsoft. Thanks for clarifying that.
