I have heard that you can use the same windows xp key on both a laptop and a pc at the same time. Is this true? Cant seem to find the answer to this anywhere.

alrighty then..thanks a lot. i think the person that said that meant that the "pc and laptop" thing was for office 2003 student and teacher edition, not windows xp..

That rule applies for all versions of Office, not just the student versions. As noted, it does not apply to Windows.

Yes You can. Or You can just wait 4 months and install it on any computer.

You can install it on two machines with the same key with no problem.
However, the first pc to be activated will own that key; the second pc will be fine with that key until 30 days from the point of install.
The 2nd pc will have to be activated with another key or reformatted and reinstalled.
Or do the non-legal way... ;)

There is an exception to the rule - maybe two. Those are Academic Editions and Corporate Editions of XP Pro. I have the former and all three of my computers use the same key - and all get validated as Kosher for updates.
