from what i've experienced you can put apps on XP (as long as it's compatible)
and keep your games on your original partition/OS ...
since not all games are compatible with XP (sure there's patches n updates but not for every game)
unless you got a high end system and you only play new games you might want to put all of it on XP
but i've find that most games run faster under my w98se partition i tend to keep my games on a separate partition....
There is no reason to install your apps/games on a different partition.
If WinXP ever gets messed up and you need to re-install it, even though your apps are on a different partition they most likely won't run since all the registry settings they made are now gone. You'd end up re-installing them all anyways.
