Optimise the visual settings - put on Classic View and then Right-click My Computer-->Properties-->Advanced-->Performance Settings-->Adjust for Best Performance

All excellent ideas...disabling the visual styles and using the classic shell should help a good bit.

run tweak xp....that can help get rid of hidden clutter....

Also if you are using a lappy with shared RAM for the graphics then go into your BIOS and put it down to 16 or 32 MB to free up some RAM

Turn off your firewall and virus checker unless you are connected to the net.....if not connected and not using unknown files then turn them off

thanks for the suggestions! My video card is a RADEON m-6, which i believe has a (wopping) 16MB dedicated memory. The Classic view did save me about 20MB memory... any more ideas? and what is a flux box?
