Jeez...this has been one crummy day for my computer. My current problem is that my network connection won't work. I have an ECS K7S5A w/built on LAN...and a Linksys router...and suddenly DHCP wont work. I first tried ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew, but that didn't work...it gave me some error. I can manually assign the IP info, but that doesn't work. I've also tried to unistall the card, and then reboot...but nada. Is there anyway to completely remove the network card in XP and then reinstall it, thereby renewing the IP?

Thanks...

Try the networking or OS forum, but in the mean time..

What was the message from the "some error"? That would be very helpful to start.

Sorry for being non-descriptive, but I'm at work...and I can't remember the error word-for-word. It seemed like a normal canned message that didn't give too much info. I remember it ended with "...contact your ISP or Network Admin."

Is everything ok on your router/ISP side? What does the Linksys status page say? Are there other machines hooked up to the router? If so, are they having problems as well or is it only the one client?

I have multiple machines hooked up to the router, and the others aren't having any problem. I'm pretty sure it's a software problem.

Okay...I came home for lunch and here's the exact error:

"An error occured while renewing interface Local Area Connection 3 : Unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out."

As I said before, it can't be the router, because I'm posting this message from a laptop connected to it.

BTW...more confirmation for the fact that it isn't a hardware problem...I tried another NIC, and I have the same problem.

I've never tried a system restore before...do you just point it back to a working date (IE, 2 days ago)?

If so...I'll try that when I get home. If I have to reformate that's not all that big of a deal, but I'd definitely like to expend all of my other options first.

As it turns out I just ended up reinstalling XP...and then guess what I learned...IT WAS MY ETHERNET CABLE. Jesus, why didn't I check that first...:)

Oh well...at least I have a clean install now :)

I guess the moral here is:

check the basics first. Most problems stem from simple things.
