Windows xp networking and installing

I will be building a new system in a month or so and was considering using XP. I have a few questions I was hoping someone might have encountered.
1. I was going to use a linksy cable router to connect the new XP system to my older win98 system. Will this be a problem?
2. Can you do a clean install with an upgrade version (after a cd check for 98) or do you have to install 98 and have XP write over it?
Any help would be appreciated.
