im thinking about switching over to xp, but need to know if its more like win2000 or win9x

cause i remember my computer has had problems running under the win95/win98/win98se/winMe environment (specifically running video files (computer locks up), tried for months to fix and posted the problem on ananadtech and had no luck)

only win2000 was able to keep my computer stable

i think if i stay with the win2k engine, my computer will be fine. so i just wondering if anyone knows if xp runs on the win2k engine or others

XP is definately more like Win2000. I just changed over from Win2k pro to WinXP Pro and I can say that they are definately very similar. I didn't even have to re-dl any of the drivers I have saved on my hd, because pretty much all Win2k drivers work in XP.:) at least for the stuff I am using.

XP was made from Win2k(rather than the Win9x stuff), so I'm not surprised on the similarities. Especially since I got rid of the annoying new start menu and changed my folders back to how I like them, so now it looks pretty much exactly like the setup I had in Win2k.:)

All WinXP is is Win2k with a makeover, and tweaked to be slightly more compatible and faster.

Windows XP is nothing like 98. XP uses the a version of the NT Kernel, so you get all whats good...stability and performance.

If you already have Win2K I wouldn't bother upgrading to XP at the moment- there is very little between them both. When applications and games are written for XP I guess it will become the OS to have but right now I have XP and Win2K on my machine and I don't use XP except for compatibility testing and trying to learn how to use it.
