Windows XP missing IP address

This is a really strange problem that is probably going to end up with me reformatting....

One of my 3 comps is loaded with Windows XP Professional and is using a 100 mbps Realtek NIC to connect to a 10/100 mbps D-link switch which is connected to a cable modem. The comp is using DHCP to automatically retrieve an ip address. It has been working fine along side my other XP machine and my Linux server all of which are getting unique ips from the cable modem. The problem started a week or 2 ago after I had just scanned for viruses with norton using a new def pack. After it finished I uninstalled it since it was trialware and removed some garbage apps I can't remember the names of. Then I ran windows update and got a couple new hotfixes.

After rebooting I couldn't use any net apps as they would all get network errors. So I opened a command prompt and typed ipconfig and the address and netmask were 0.0.0.0! As far as I know when dhcp fails it's supposed to be 169.254.x.y. So i typed ipconfig /renew and got an error about a missing file which windows of course didn't give me the name of. It went something like: error while renewing Local Area connection 1: Windows could not locate the specified file. I've rebooted and have tried removing the drivers and letting Windows reinstall the network which seemed to do nothing. I've also searched microsoft.com and google which will only help you if you're having trouble with getting the default ip. Lastly I just tried pinging the loopback address and it does respond.

My only guess on what could be causing this is maybe microsoft decided they didn't like my serial key so they broke my connection when I connected to them with the autoupdater. I heard some rumors about that somewhere earlier but never found out if they had started a policy like that.

stats:

Athlon 900mhz
forget the mobo Asus or Epox I think
NV Geforce256
256mb pc133 RAM
2 wd 8gb hdds
recently updated drivers

Just ask if you want more computer stats or if you'd like an exact copy of the error (I'll have to put it on a disk and bring it to this comp). Thanks to anyone who replies.
