Hi,
I have and old IBM Aptiva that i will be giving to my younger sister and I'm wondering how it would perform with Windows XP. The specs are as follows:

IBM Aptiva E4N
K6-2 350mh processor (I have a 500 somewhere but i cant get it to work)
256 of PC133 Crucial Ram (Running at PC100)
10gb Hard drive
32x CD-ROM Drive
No operating system

Thank You in advance as I hope to get rid of this machine as fast as possible. Also, if you have any clues on how to get a K6-2 500 in there it would be greatly appreciated (I dont have the motherboard name or diagram)

I've installed XP on a P2/300 with 256 M/Ram, it ran fine once I disabled unnecessary services and items from startup.

The first system I tested XP on was an IBM just like yours but with a 15gb IBM HD. It worked fine as soon as I set it to run without all the bells and whistles. You shouldn't have any problems.

You should be able to run XP on that system, but you will get better performance with 2000 Pro. I ran XP on a similar machine and the performace was pretty bad.

But your milage may vary. Post back and let us know how it turns out.

Turn off the fruity window skin (My Computer Properties > Advanced > Performance > uncheck Use Visual Styles...). System Restore is also a good candidate for defenestration as long as your younger sister isn't notorious for screwing up her computer all the time. 😉
