hey guys,

ive had this couple of annoyances with windows xp for a long time but they are hard to explain and search for, so they never get resolved. i finally thought id take a stab.

first:
windows xp does this thing to the pulldown menus at the top of the screen where it doesnt show you all of the options in it until you hit the little expander arrow at the bottom of the menu. i really dont understand any logic behind what it decides to show you and what it doesnt, but its damned annoying because things im used to being there arent there when you pull the menu down at first and it can send you on a wild goose chase for some function which is just hidden (until you remember this annoyance of course.... argh!) how do you get it to stop doing that?

second:

this one i think goes all the way back to windows 95!!!!

ever have a line of text, where you just want to select that one sentence, and ONLY the characters/spaces in that sentence, but instead when you highlight the section you want and you hit the last character, all the sudden the highlighted color jolts all the way over to the right side and selects the entire line including all of the empty space after it? do you know what i mean? i can further explain if necessary..... its just really annoying when you want to accurately select text and you find windows making some decisions for you what it wants highlighted and what it doesnt.

like i said........hard to describe, but probably easy fixes :]
thanks for reading

Personalised menus is a feature of IE and Office rather than Windows itself. You will need to go into the Options in Office in order to disable it. The only place where it really shows up as part of Windows is in the Start Menu. Again, this is in the Start Menu options.

To select a sentence, hold down Ctrl and then click any word in the sentence.

damn.... i was just playing around with annoyance #2, and it looks like i still dont have a solution. it is not just when im trying to select a sentence.

for instance i have this text in outlook express including the quotes:

"L/C Test Freq.".

and i am just trying to select all the text inside the quotes, including the periods so its:

L/C Test Freq.

BUT, i bet you can select that last period without windows highlighting everything including the second quotationa nd second period can you??????

thats what im talking about! ARGH!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure what you can do about the text selection issue (I often hold down shift, control, and then I use the arrow keys, but that only applies for word processors) , but for the menus, you can double click them and they stretch out fully. If you use Windows and only Windows (which, by the way, means you are missing out on some great operating systems ;)) you can try and get into the habit of treating pull down menus as icons...double clicking. Also, how is it only IE and Office? Many apps do that...without reverse settings in there options...but maybe it isn't Windows.
