I bought an old laptop with and loaded xp on it. It only came with 64 mb of memory. Needless to say it is slow. It is upgradeable to 128 for about $50. Does nayone know if I would see a worthwhile performance increase? I am wondering because even 128 seem low.

What kind of memory?

512MB of laptop memory should cost $50, not 128MB. This is assuming it supports PC2700 and what not. Perhaps if you give us some more info...

www.Crucial.com memory selector to see what you can add.

128 is still low for XP, Windows 2000 would be better. But if you go to some Windows tweaking site you might be able to turn off enough services to make it run OK.

Dear god... why'd you even buy it? Any system old enough to use EDO shouldn't have XP on it. You masochist!

But really... what kind of RAM?

100pin EDO SODIMM?
144pin EDO SODIMM?
72pin EDO SIMM?
168pin EDO DIMM?

I can't see it being worth putting any money into unless you can go up to atleast 256mb ram.

thanks for the input. i bought it thinking i would run windows 98 on it and use it just to surf the net but unfortunately the version I have is not the second edition and it appears most wireless cards need second edition to function. Since I also had an extra version of xp I decided to try it. I did not think it would even run. But it is actually not as bad as I thought it would. Once you get used to the wait it actually is not that bad. It is 144 pin edo so dim

omg...64mb ram + xp is a nightmare.
even 128mb is a nightmare, that being said its probably worth it, u need every mb u can get. don't load any wallpapers, turn off all fancy features graphics in system properties performance settings optimize that thing, make it ugly, no themes, no wallpaper, no nothing!!

and yea old memory is more expensive, and no old laptops dont' take much ram for upgrades at all, they just won't recognize bigger sodimms.
another reason why laptops just are very poor value for money

This site has some really good tweaks for speeding up XP. Windows boots in about a minute on my P4 3GHz, 512MB of RAM, and ATA100 7200RPM comp.
