i have orderd a dell machine with Windows XP Media Center Edition with a core 2 processor. my ? is does the operating system support duel core?

All versions of Windows XP support multiple cores provided they are in one physical chip in one physical socket.

No. It is however true that only XP Professional supports multiple processors on multiple sockets

MCE incidentally is essentially a slightly different version of Pro. It might support dual-socket configurations too.
