Windows XP, Major Boot Up Problem

I recently built a system (Athlon XP 1800+, Epox 8k3a MB) and it was running great for about 6 weeks on Windows XP. Recently, I tried to turn on the machine and I was prompted with the Window's error message that the computer was not shut down properly, and it gave me the options to start it in safe mode, safe mode with networking, and normal. I have tried starting windows in all three modes without any success. The computer starts to boot, and than the screen turns black. The computer continues to power, but that is it. Any ideas on what the problem is out how to troubleshoot?

You may have gotten a corrupted file for some reason, maybe a power surge, maybe a fault in the hard drive. You will probably have to do a repair from the install CD.
 
There are numerous possibilties as to what went wrong and instead of the usual Q&A which takes days to complete sometimes I'll recommend the following, since it's your system and you know what if any programs have been installed recently, ect. just go Here and follow the troublshooters steps to resolving your problem.
 
I used the link and tried troubleshooting but I still cannot get into my system. The black screen with windows XP shows up for about 5 seconds, blinks, and the screen turns black. So far I have tried safe mode, Last Known Good Configuration, and the other options. All have the same result. Any other ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks.
 
Go into the bios and make your primary boot device the drive the XP CD is in then insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.


When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.

When you are prompted to do so, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
At the command prompt, type the appropriate commands to diagnose and repair your Windows XP installation.

For a list of commands that are available in Recovery Console, type recovery console commands or help at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.

For information about a specific command, type help commandname at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.
To exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer, type exit at the command prompt, and then press ENTER. If you can't get fixed using the recovery console you are going to mostly likely have to do a full re-install.
