What is the fix for this situation? I have everything cranked up, and its still kind of low. I remember seeing a fix for this, but tried doing a search and couldn't find it on Anandtech.

Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Device Volume > "Advanced" > Options > Properties
Click "Other", and if it says "AC97 Controls", check whatever's in the bottom box and click OK.

Then, raise the volume levels for those.

I hope this was what it is...

Well... I just tried that.. but "No Go"... so.. I decided to try something else.. which is suprisingly working :)

If any of you have noticed , I am running an SQ2500 Aureal Vortex 2 sound card in my Windows XP Pro box.. ..

I decided to try the newest version of the reference Vortex 2 Beta drivers for Windows 2000

To my delight, things were thumpin again

No kidding...so am I! That's weird how it didn't work for you. But, I'm glad those drivers are working. Can you give me a link to them? Plus, what [kind] of speakers are you using?

Also, FYI, in a lot of the Vortex 2 cards, the first (front) channel is not amplified, and if you use headphones and nonpowered speakers, you are supposed to use the rear channel. (it detects if front and/or back channels are being used). I finally read the manual and that is what it said to do!

I think that you should invest in some Klipsch Promedia 5.1 speaker.... I have them mounted on the ceiling over my head, on the desktop, and over the top of my desk..... when I put it on near to full (full is so loud it would kill my ferret 3 floors above me), it makes me want to cry =(
