Windows xp logon / startup problem

Did a quick search and couldn't find any info on this.

Upgraded from windows 98 to XP and the computer worked fine. Now I need to get some info off this computer and I can't get it to start. Power on, the computer goes to log on and it asks if you want to activate windows. Press yes and it goes back to desktop and select user screen.

What info do you need?
Data,
or account info?
or progs?
If it is data, then load up windows explorer and see where it is and copy it over the network, or, burn it.

Crap like that is usually badly written spyware, or a trojan. And if it is, unfortunately it's not easy to fix if you don't have the proper software tools at your disposal. Search google with your symptoms if you find a similar help thread. It very well could be a single registry edit you have to make to get the computer to boot up, but I'm not even sure if you can edit the registry from the recovery console.
