Windows XP locks upon exiting Counter-Strike

Afterplaying CS for an extended period of time, when I exit, my windows XP box freezes. This problem does not occur when I play for short periods of time. I tried to reproduce the problem by entering CS and just running around, and then exiting, but it didn't happen. It only happens when I play for a longer period of time (> 1/2 hour, maybe?). What could be causing this problem?

I'm running WinXP Pro, installed freshly on a dual P3-700 Abit VP6 with a Visiontek GF3 TDH using the latest NVidia reference drivers, and the latest 4-in-1's.

btw, when it freezes does it leave a little window of counterstrike in the upper left of the screen?
