Windows XP locks up

I get about 4-5 lock-ups a day that freeze my system for about 30 seconds then returns to normal. The event viewer has this error:

The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort1, did not respond within the timeout period.

The only devices connected to IDE1 are cd-rom drives. The Windows "help" center say "a disc or cd-rom in device may be damaged or dirty", there are no disc in any drives.
I get this message also in event viewer with the same time of error:

The ring buffer that stores incoming mouse data has overflowed (buffer size is configurable via the PS/2 mouse properties in device manager).

Thanks in advance for any help on this, SM

Do you have the CDRom drives set at Cable Select or Master\Slave?

If the second error has the same Source (ATAPI), but Event ID 11
then see above as they are related.
