Windows XP locking up

I've got a computer that seems to work fine (boots fine, etc.) except after 4-5 minutes of being booted (after clicking on a username), the computer reliably locks up and screen goes black. But it always happens at the *exact same* interval.

Tried disabling EVERYTHING in msconfig.

Something ctfmon keeps loading itself too.

Ideas?

The obvious, what happens in safe mode?

Also, enter the BIOS or halt POST using the Pause/Break key or better yet boot into windows pre-install. Verify that the system is able to run with video being displayed for beyond the 5 mins (preferably test for 30 mins).

This is to help isolate to a thermal problem (CPU, video card, MB/RAM, etc.).

Report the results of these tests and others will dive in to assist you further.

I *believe* the hard disk makes a few noises before the screen goes black. If it was just locking up, I'd say its perhaps a dying drive... but the screen also goes black. Is that symptomatic of a dying hard drive?
