Windows XP is Still The Dominant OS

"Despite our love for Windows 7, the latest Microsoft OS still isn't the #1 platform on the market. Instead, Microsoft's opus Windows XP is still the reigning champ, claiming 47.19-percent of the market as of January 31, 2012. Strangely enough, the first month of the year actually saw a resurgence in the legacy platform, slightly higher than December 2011's 46.52-percent market share."

Not sure what to make of this because I thought Windows XP was in serious decline but it's still holding on. I bet you the people still with Windows XP are NOT gamers so don't really care about only having DX9.

I have one XP system for older games and a Windows 7 system for newer games. I don't mind Windows 7 but I still like XP.

I have two desktops (actually floortops) - one XP and one Win 7. I have a laptop Win 7. I am not a gamer - don't have that kind of time to waste.

XP Pro is still my dominnt machine, mainly because of several peripherals and about 50 applications. I could transition to Win 7, but that would require going first from XP to Vista, and then Vista to Win 7.

One of these days I'll just start over. :)

Windows 7 rocks...would hate to go back to XP. Will probably upgrade our machines to 8 when it gets here.

Just curious, why do you hate it?

Because it seemed like XP was pretty much no frills (with Classic enabled) and very easy to navigate and use. Certainly there is some better functionality with W7 and some of it's utilities, that's true. I just don't like the way things are laid out on W7, folders and directories and such.

One of the biggest reasons I dislike W7... I can't use Outlook Express anymore... :':)':)'( My hate extends to Windows Live crap, too.

Entusiasts are a very small fraction of the Global market.

Regardless of this fact Enthusiasts tend to analyze all the data that they see as though they are 99% of the market.

I have friends that donot know what version of Windows they are running. Only when they are in trouble I find out that they are still using XP on a Dell from years ago with 256MB RAM.

XP is way too prone to viruses and other kinds of corruptions. Very buggy compared to Windows 7.

I'm still on XP. Next machine I build I'll go 7, 8 or Linux depending on when it happens and what I feel like doing at the time. I don't really have any immediate plans to build a new machine, I just don't really have the need for it, it does what I need to. Most of my activity happens on my server. VMs, coding/compiling, testing etc... I do lot of misc random stuff on my machine from photo/video/audio editing, cad, gaming etc on top of programming though, but I'm not at a point where I need more power.

Just because it's been so long since I built a machine, my next one will probably be super kick ass. Like triple SLI video cards and whole nine yards. On the other hand that may be a waste as I hardly game and it would just be using tons of power for nothing.

That is the funniest thing Ive heard in a long time.

Bought a bunch of notebooks with VISTA and VISTA is crap. Switched them to XP along with using Centurion's DriveShield/Smart Restart and have used these guys on the networks ALL over town and never had to worry about virus or even spyware.

The main reason I hold off any change is because I need my old software application which do everything I need to do, do it fast, do it my way and do it inexpensively.

I dont like all the bullshit intermediate screens that MS has added beginning with VISTA. For example, just got a call last week from some friend who had network connection trouble with his newer system and trying to help him over the phone to go thru all the extra bullshit intermediate screens to get something done reminded me what a downer the new OSes can be. Too verbose.

If VISTA and WIN 7 are so great, how come the Public Library Systems havent converted over to it? They upgraded all the Office packages a couple times to at least 2007.

When I built my new computer I had planned on switching my other 3 computers over to W7... you know, for continuity sake. NOT. I'm sticking with XP on them.

Yes, it seems like it takes a bit to get anywhere. I don't know, XP just seemed simpler and more user friendly.

Vista reminded me too much of Win ME... and I ain't ever going there again.

Oh man I hate Outlook Express. That software is such crap, for a while I was always fixing it, particularly with the 2GB folder size limitations that pop up without warning and just make it act stupid. I've switched a few people who are heavy email users to Mozilla Thunderbird to get away from those issues.

Although I guess I shouldn't hate it too much since it does bring in work for us every so often...

As far as XP, I don't hate it, but I won't use it on any of my computers again. It's old, tired, driver support is waning, it really doesn't handle multi-core CPUs and large amounts of RAM very well (and the driver support sucks more with 64bit XP), DirectX is limited to 9.0c, etc. It is also the most prone to viruses and malware these days, not that it is an issue for me but I'm just speaking in general terms here.

How about trying Mozilla Thunderbird with Windows 7 because that is what I use after I found out that I couldnt use Outlook Express anymore?

I have both Windows 7 and Windows XP but I mostly use my Windows XP computer for pretty much everything. It has the latest Firefox browser and Thunderbird email client. My Windows XP computer runs everything very fast with no crashes or problems.

Every time I have to touch an XP or Win2K3 box I cringe because it's such a pain to find anything compared to Win7, Win2k8. And OE is a reason to avoid XP, not cling to it. OE is possibly the worst mail client ever.

I just rolled out 15 pcs at work and stripped them of win7 and put on xp. I personally use both at home but find myself using xp more because I have used it for well over 10 years and it still does what I need. My biggest gripe with win7 is the folder/files layout and structure. If I can make it look like xp I would donate more of my time in win7.

The layout on OE is simple... it delivers my mail and I can store them in folders when I'm done. No favorites, no 5 toolbars with stuff I don't use, no calendar and other nonsense I don't use (and can't turn off.) I don't need my inbox divided up by how old the mail is. I don't need a preview pane that keeps showing up even though I turn it off.

I did download Thunderbird as a trial, it was about as cluttered as Outlook or Live Mail... and maybe I didn't give it a fair shake, it's supposed to be pretty workable. I'm using Outlook 2003 right now because that's what I have... and earplugs from listining to my wife bitch about it.

In general Outlook 21007 (or 2010) is the best.

However (if funds are very tight), the Free Thuntherbird or, Essential PIM are thousnad time better than OE, and they even come in portable versions.

Outlook is the best if you have Exchange because of the calendar integration. Otherwise it's a toss up because it's so terrible at pretty much everything else. It's a mediocre mail client at best and completely sucks at IMAP.
