Windows XP is SLOOWWWW - Help!

Ok first off:
Just put on a clean install, never used XP before.
Abit motherboard with Via Chipset
Pentium III 1Ghz
256 Meg PC133 Ram
CL Geforce DDR
80 GB WD HD
20 GB WD HD
Crappy Sound
3Com Nic

I got a copy of XP Professional (full not upgrade). Put it on today and it is SLOW. Programs open slow (Like IE and Word), when I try to click and drag over a bunch of files it slows to a crawl and my mouse jitters. Even moving my mouse over the buttons on top of this forum (profile, search, today, etc) bring the CPU usage up to 75%!! The only thing fast about it, is the bootup time; from when I hit the power button to when the log on screen pops up is like 35-40 seconds, very fast - but everthing else is SLOW! Windows2000 Pro never had these problems.

Are there known issues with XP being slow? What can I do to fix things? Right now the video drivers are the ones that came with the install and I haven't put the Via 4in1 drivers on yet. If I can't get this thing to go faster Windows2000 Pro goes back on tomorrow.

Thanks guys!

You really need at least 512 meg of memory. Is your HD running like crazy all the time it is slow ? If so, then that is your problem. (pageswapping due to insufficient memory)

Memory useage so far has never hit 200 meg... it doesn't swap to disk. Memory isn't the problem...

Turn off eye candy: ie go System Properties, Advanced, Performance Settings, and turn off all you don't need. I personally only keep the Task Panes on.

Go Start-->run-->MSConfig, and on the startup, turn off all the garbage you don't want.

Go Start-->run-->Regedit-->HKCR-->Control Panel-->Desktop and turn MenuShowDelay down from 400 (milliseconds) to make the Start Menu respond faster. I have mine on 100.

Thanks Ionizer86, I'll check those things out.

Budman - puhllleeeasee! The specs are perfectly fine for running an OS and MS Office, I don't play games. You don't need an Athlon XP 3200 with 1 GB ram to run an OS and Office at a decent speed. Windows 2000 has zero problems, it has nothing to do with the system being "old".

Edit - DMA enabled.

There are 1G systems at my work with 128 meg running just fine with no slowdown, not too much different then my system. I am just missing something, not sure what it is. 1G is plenty to handle XP...

Ok 4in1 is installed with new nvidia drivers and everything is fixed! :D no more slow downs.

All you guys who think that hardware somehow starts to perform less because something newer comes out are smoking dope!

What did I say? Drives with DMA on, when you installed 4 in 1 with ide drivers your drives are now running in dma mode now, that's why it's fast.

I run it flawlessly with P3 600 MHz, 128 MB ram with many bells and whistles turned on. His is overkill for Win XP.

I'd always start with getting all the proper drivers installed in the proper order - thus this slowdown will be avoided in the future.

I tried to stop this argument by showing it as simple misunderstandings. It just led to more flames. I'm getting out so I'm not booted.

On the 6:30 post (edited at 6:32) cvpifreak said DMA was enabled.

Then at 6:49 you posted with DMA in your post. Your post was misinterpreted by Trinitron.

Then at 6:59 you claimed that cvpifreak NEVER said he had DMA on. But he did on his 6:32 edit.

Is your clock wrong ???

I told him to enable DMA at 07/14/2003 7:26 PM

He edited that he did at Edited: 07/14/2003 at 7:32 PM by cvpifreak

Last time I counted 7:26 came BEFORE 7:32

Budman you never told me to do anything, you asked me a question (DMA enabled on your hd/cdrom ?) and made a dumbass statement that was blatently false.

I then answered your question. I had DMA enabled.

Thanks for the help everyone, its working great now. dullard you are right my system is overkill for just the OS, these other guys are on crack.

BTW - Trinitron was correct to begin with

Budman you are a god damn idiot.

You asked a question: DMA enabled on your hd/cdrom ?
I answered it: DMA enabled.

Then you claimed to fix the problem by "telling" me what to do, which you did not do. Trinitron noted that I had already answered your question about DMA being enabled.

It doesn't make sense for you to say that I didn't mention DMA in my first post, because your post came after that! And after your question post I answered it!! This was ALL before the problem was solved by myself.

Case closed moron. Stop posting and go away.
