Welcome to the Forums. You might find this page helpful for the conceptual side of this. What motherboard are you using, to start with? An Asus of some kind, I gather?

boot from CD, hit F6

most users who first use the SATA hard drives do not figure out that the paths that you put the floppy disk to help boot the drive may not be correct.

it's not necessarily the the hard drive that's the problem in the detection process, but usually the controller in which the hard drive is connected to. when you're extracting the files from the CD or drivers folder, all the extensions must be 100% accurate.

i.e.

\DriverDisk Driver Disk folder for installing Windows NT base OS
Txtsetup.oem Driver install file for Windows NT base OS
\PIDE VIA ATA/ATAPI Host Controller driver folder
\2003IA32
VIApide.inf VIA ATA/ATAPI Host Controller driver install information file
VIApdsk.sys VIA ATA/ATAPI Host Controller driver for Win Server 2003 IA32
VIApdsk.cat Microsoft WHQL file
\Win2000
VIApide.inf VIA ATA/ATAPI Host Controller driver install information file
VIApdsk.sys VIA ATA/ATAPI Host Controller driver for Win2000
VIApdsk.cat Microsoft WHQL file
\Win98-Me
VIApide.inf VIA ATA/ATAPI Host Controller driver install information file
VIApdsk.sys VIA ATA/ATAPI Host Controller driver for Win98 and Me
VIApide.vxd VIA ATA/ATAPI Host Controller driver for Win98 and Me ACPI
\Winnt40
VIApide.inf VIA ATA/ATAPI Host Controller driver install information file
VIApdsk.sys VIA ATA/ATAPI Host Controller driver for WinNT 4.0
\WinXP
VIApide.inf VIA ATA/ATAPI Host Controller driver install information file
VIApdsk.sys VIA ATA/ATAPI Host Controller driver for WinXP
VIApdsk.cat Microsoft WHQL file

The driver disk folder is only a folder that is used, but when you put it onto a floppy, you have to obey the format of the readme's.
Hope this helped.

I suggest you read my SATA info page and note the stuff about controllers that have two modes and require different types of drivers depending upon the mode selected.

No, the VIA drivers was just an example. It's the floppy disk.

When the blue screen pops up, quickly press F6 when you're told to.

Yeah, we know you've gotten this far.

Alright, make sure the manufacturer's supplied SATA controller floppy disk (or extract correctly from CD or website, etc - according to right folders and extensions, etc.) is clean and workable. Because if it's dirty or incompatible, things are going to work during detection process.
Make sure the *.oem file is not in any folders on the floppy disk, and that the folders are accessible and contain the required OS installation files for the HD (Win XP, 2K, 9xMe, NT, etc.)

Sometimes you have to flash your BIOS for an update in order for this to work correctly. The manufacturer's website and all the readme's need to be read and clearly understood, something tells me that you've skipped this part?

Also, since it's an A8V Deluxe,

1) look at page 4-24 of your manual. Notice that you can set the Promise controller to RAID mode or to IDE mode. It'll use different drivers depending upon which mode you pick.

2) for a single SATA drive you would want the controller in IDE mode rather than RAID mode, I believe.

3) search the mobo's CD-ROM for files named Makedisk.exe. Is there one in a folder with a name such as 378IDE or 378ATA? If so, run that version of Makedisk.exe to generate a driver floppy that you can use during Windows Setup with the F6-key routine. There will definitely be a folder named 378RAID (see page 5-33 of your manual) but that makes the RAID-mode driver floppy, not the IDE-mode driver floppy.
