Windows XP Install Problem...

I hope someone out there can help me... I tried installing win xp last night and here's the scenerio... i boot off the cd and create a partition and then it says it's copying files to my drive, then it asks me to reboot... but when the computer reboots, I get a really weird error, like your drive has been configured wrong, check your hardware configuration. The problem is stupid windows configured my drive... I have an Ultra 66 20 GB Maxtor drive, but I did separately (F6, then push 's') load the controller driver for the drive, so windows should've configured it right... if anyone has a solution I'm open for any suggestions... thanks a lot!!!

I had a problem like that when I was updating my cousins new Gateway 1.4 athlon, the computer restarted and then came up with a DOS message that stated that the hard drive was corrupted. and then the install would not continue. you don't have a 'pre-built' computer do you? like a Gateway??? if you do you might be out of luck, and you cant upgrade your OS. that is the what I found out. nothing I could do would get past that message. someone on this forum said it was because of what Gateway does to build their computers, or it might be the IDE controllers that Win2k did not like. Oh, and I also tried WinXP (build 2600), it would not install either.

thanks for the help... i have a computer that i built myself a year and half ago... i think the problem might be with the ide channels... i remember having problems installing win2k with the zip drive plugged in... so maybe that'll work...
