Windows XP install problem

I am having a bad time trying to install Windows XP on a computer that I have.

When I boot the machine to the current operating system Win98 SE, it does not have a CD-ROM. The BOIS shows a CD-Rom on boot up and both harddrives in the machine.

When I boot to the CD-ROM the install begins and cannot find a previous version of the operating system and asks for the 98 disk...

Any help for me out there?

you have an upgrade version of xp, not a bootable one. u need to look in control panel/system/device manager and see if the cd-rom is listed, or listed with an error. If it isn't, run the add hardware wizard.

Upgrade CD's are bootable.

Fix Win98 so that it sees the CD. Then boot to Win98, insert the XP CD, and do the ugrade. That's the safest route.

I have tried over and over to get WIn98SE to find the CD-rom drive....The BOIS says that it is there and I can boot to it. Windows add/remove hardware cannot find the CD-Rom. which should come up as Drive E:

I think I will boot the XP disk and install from there. I have a data backup on another drive...It is just a pain to reinstall programs again.

When it asks for the win 98 cd put it in the cd-rom. It will check it and then continue with the install. You'll be prompted to put the XP cd back in.

I knew that it would continue the install after checking the Win98. The problem is that it does not find Win98 installed on the C: drive until after it asks for the CD-Rom. Form what I can tell is that it will not pick up the settings and the installed programs into the XP install.

I'll second that. But it sounds to me like you've got a hardware problem somewhere - bad cables, jumper settings, or controllers. If you don't fix that problem first, you're just going to hit them again later.
