I'm using Windows XP Pro on a Dell 8400. Is it worth it to turn on the indexing service to speed up searches?

Any downside?

Thanks.

I turn it off on every machine I own and build.

I just don't like the HD thrashing when I'm not expecting it. Makes me nervous.

I don't really know all the ins and outs of it though.

personally ive never found it to speed up any searches, do i turn it if, and like boomerang said, i aslo dont like random harddrive trashing, which is suppose to be only while machine is idle, but have had it happen when in the middle of a game as well

the indexing service in xp has barely been updated since windows 9x. it does okay doing some basic file name searches but as others have mentioned it is sorely outdated.
