The Indexing service keeps a index of all files on all volumes to make file searches instant.

Like all Windows housekeeping processes it ONLY indexes files when your computer is idle and has not been used for some time. (ever notice how your hardrive activity light will come on if you leave your computer alone for awhile? :D)

You'll see no benefit from turning it off really, it uses less than a MB of RAM :/

I keep it off. Even if I'm doing a wildcard search it's doesn't take more than 10-15 seconds at the most and I rarely use the search anyway.

Off. Though it's probably far better than its ancestor, FindFast, I still have bad dreams about my harddrive going nuts for "no apparent reason" when it decides to index the drive.
