Windows XP / IE / Steam issue

Hey guys,

After a recent reboot of my system, my windows XP box came back up, but none of my usual default loading programs loaded (like myspace IM, Asus Probe, Daemon tools, etc). I didn't think much of it, until I loaded IE7. Wel IE7 "hangs" at "Connecting". Firefox by contrast, loads just fine.

I can however, run IE with "no addons" which indicates that its not my internet or anything, but IE.

Interestingly, STEAM also does not run. AT ALL. I can double click it and nothing happens.

Finally, one last weird thing - I cannot disable my LAN adapter and then reenable it. I get a message that says "It is not possible to disable the connection at this time..."

I run an amd 3800+ dual core
Windows XP Pro SP2 (all legit)
2GB RAM
plenty of HDs, etc.

EDIT: I have run a virus check and windows update is up to date.
 
I just also noticed that MSN / Windows Live Messenger also doesn't load when prompted. Is there some universal thing for all these that is corrupted possibly?
 
Do you PC stuck in the start? I had to face such errors and application errors. One thing which I did to solve this was restarting Explorer.exe again. Try that!

Nope, the computer doesn't stop or have issues upon bootup. Its very odd, its only specific applications that seem to be messed up, like the ones named:

Steam
IE (with add-ons)
Windows Live Mesenger

Everything else seems to be working ok.

I tried restarting explorer.exe but that didn't fix anything 🙁 THanks for the suggestion though.

Any other thoughts?
 
I am sorry about the first error as I was not able to fix it for you. I have found a solution for your 2nd error on another forum please try this
Click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then OK.

At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each line:

net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 oldcatroot2

reboot the computer back to normal mode. Now try it.
 
Hey there, still no progress.

However, IE DOES work, if I let the window "connect" for about 5 minutes or so.

THis is truly the weirdest issue I've ever seen.

Any other advice?
 
I haven't suffered such a severe error. Sorry my friend I can't help you further but I shall like to hear something form other expert on this forum.
 
You can try rebuilding your TCP/IP stack. Open a command prompt window and type:

netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

You can change resetlog.txt to any log file name.
