Windows XP I/O Device error?

Hope someone can help me here, because I'm having all sorts of problems ....

The problem shows up when trying to access my DVD rom under windows Xp professional RC2 - namely, that I can't. Trying to do anything with said drive produces the error message :

H:\ Is not accesible.
The request cannot be preformed because of an I/O device error.

Fortunately, my CD burner (which is attached to the same IDE channel as the above drive) is still working properly, so I can use my cd's.

The drive in question is a Toshiba DVD SD-M1212. I'm using version 4.34 of the Via 4-1 drivers (have tried other versions of the drivers as well, no luck.

If anyone can help me out, I'd really appreciate it. Please also ask if you need any information - I'd do just about anything to get this frustrating problem fixed on what is otherwise a really nice OS.

Thanks in advance!
