Windows XP - How much Ram can it Recognize

32bit versions can recogonize upto 4gig, but with many mother boards your usefull amount will be less than this. The 64bit versions can use above 4gig (16gig for XP pro 64 I think, but would have to go double check)

The Intel /pae switch extension in the boot.ini is supported under 32 bit XP installations, including home I believe.

All this does is expand the number of bits that can be used by physical memory addresses. This would allow the OS to recognize up to 64GB of physical memory.
