On one of my computers, after I did a fresh install of XP Pro, the computer would boot straight to the desk top. I like it that way. Something my daughter did causes it to boot to a blue screen where you gotta chose a user first. When I go to "change the way users log in", its seems no matter what option I choose, WIndows always either boots to a screen requiring log on or choose a user. How the heck to I restore it to booting straight to the desk top?

Search Microsoft Help and support. There's a simple registry change that will do that.
Though TweekUI or X-Setup Pro will do it for you.

You don't even need tweak ui to do it. Just click start - run then type control userpasswords2 - you can do it somewhere in there if i remember correctly (i'm on a domain here so i can't check for you).

Here's what I was talking about:

You can also use turn on automatic logon without editing the registry in Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition and in Microsoft Windows XP Professional on a computer that is not joined to a domain. To do this, follow these steps:
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type control userpasswords2, and then click OK.

Note When users try to display help information in the User Accounts window in Windows XP Home Edition, the help information is not displayed. Additionally, users receive the following error message:
Cannot find the Drive:\Windows\System32\users.hlp Help file. Check to see that the file exists on your hard disk drive. If it does not exist, you must reinstall it.
Clear the "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" check box, and then click Apply.
In the Automatically Log On window, type the password in the Password box, and then retype the password in the Confirm Password box.
Click OK to close the Automatically Log On window, and then click OK to close the User Accounts window.

Did your daughter creat an account for herself? If so, then this is what is causing it and the only alternative is to remove her account.

1) Click Start, Run and enter CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2
2) Select the user account you want automatically logged on
3) Uncheck Users must enter username and password..........
4) Click Apply
5) In the next dialog, enter the password, if any, for the account you chose
in Step 2
6) Ok your way out

(for me, it was installing .net that started producing that welcome screen)

I've always prefered to used "netplwiz" instead of "user controlpassword2". It's just a bit shorter. :)

If you only have one account, and it's doing this, it's because .NET framework added an account. It is perfectly safe to delete the account, it is called : ASP.NET.

Delete that, and if you only have one user, you should be back to booting directly to the desktop, so long as you don't have a password.
