Windows XP Home Upgrade

Sister-in-law has an old Gateway with Windows ME on it. We're going to upgrade her to Windows XP and up her memory and such. Anyone know how the UPGRADE version if XP works? Do I have to actually upgrade her ME or can I somehow wipe it clean and start from scratch while still using the Upgrade CD? It's a gateway so I don't know if she has a restore CD or something like that but doubht she has an actual Windows ME CD.

Anyone worked wit this before to know if it's possible? I might be able to use her restore disk to get a clean ME install and then upgrade that but I'd still prefer to start from a clean slate but sitll Upgrade since she is goign from one OS to another...

You can definitely use the "upgrade" version of XP to do a clean format/install with. During the install it will prompt you to insert an old 98/Me/2000 CD to prove ownership. I doubt it would accept a Gateway restore disc for that step though.

I've never bought OEM software before. Do you jst get a CD and the key or do you just get the key and nothing else? I do hav eno ue for the manuals and such and it looks like Newegg has the oEM for $86 or so.

Is there any legit place you can buy it from that could email you the key right away. I have a CD I coudl use but need to install the software this weekend but don't wan tto pay $20 for overnight hsipping as that kills the deal.

Well they do have te Restore CDs and NOT the actual Windows CDs so that might be a problem. I can get the OEM version for a bit cheaper but it won't get here in time.

I guess I'd either have to use the restore CDs to blast them back to ME as it was from Gateway and could then Upgrade from that but then they'll end up with all the Gateway crap on there. Or I can borrow a previous windows CD from someone to use in order to use the Upgrade Version since Gateway didn't give them an actual CD...

*sigh*

WIsh Microsoft ahd a way I could just get a key online...
