Windows XP Home SP2 & Modem

Hello Folks,

My mom installed XP Home SP2 on her PC and her modem started acting up. At first, when she tried to dial up to the Net, a window would come on asking her to manually dial. She would dial the ISP's number and then hang up and click ok and the modem would connect. The modem worked this way for a few days and now it will not connect at all.

Here is what I have tried:

1. Installed a new modem
2. Turned off the lovely Windows firewall that comes with SP2
3. Tested the modem by hitting "query" in the properties screen
4. Deleting the ISP connection and creating a new connection.
5. Going to Micorsoft's website to see if there are any updates
6. Using System Restore

Is there a way to uninstall SP2? I am guessing that I have not gone back far enough in time as SP2 is not affected when I use system restore.

I am now at a loss and the only thing left is to take the PC in unless someone can give me some pointers.

Just uninstall SP2.... I have had enough problems with SP2 I've just uninstalled it on a few machines.

It's under the add/remove programs list... just as easy as that.

Just go into the firewall settings and turn off the firewall for the modem.

Meaning you still have to go into the modem properties and make sure it's disabled there too.

I had no trouble at all with XP2 and my modem. I have even swapped the modem out for another one to test it. XP found both modems fine and they worked without a hitch. The firewall was on the whole time, too.

I suspect that you have some sort of driver conflict or you have old drivers giving you trouble.

Have you tried hitting F8 and selecting last known good configuration?

BTW, XP Service Pack 2 shows up as removable in Add or Remove Programs in the computer I am using.

I think I mentioned it but I have also installed a new modem. I have the dialer set up to dial my ISP which is BellSouth. When I open the dialer, the window comes up, I type in the password and hit connect. I get an error message telling me the modem can't connect and I need to manually dial the local number, hit ok in the window and then hang up the phone. This is the only way I can get the PC to connect to the Internet.

I have tested the modem with Hyperterminal and I used the same local number for my ISP. The ISP server then prompted me for a a login and password. I typed in both and Hyperterminal connected and started printing out a bunch of gibberish on the screen. No problem as this was just a test to confirm connectivity. Hypertermial dials using the modem without my intervention.

Any other tweaks or ideas? My mom will not be able to connect using my method for a variety of reasons.
