my friends PC which is running win XP, probably without any of the service packs or patches has developed a weird problem where when you log in by clicking on any of the icons for usernames it instantly logs you out.

it shows the "loading profile.." text, then the instant it gets to the desktop it logs straight off again.

i have tried booting from safemode and every other boot option and it does the same thing! looks like a virus to me, is there anything i can do insteadof having to reload XP over the top again.

cheers then. ;)

I don't know if this will work, but I would try this: Boot into safe mode and restore to the last good restore point at the option menu or once at the desktop you can choose any of the earlier restore points from system restore.

i had this problem
called a guy i know hoping he could help (being the DMV head tech support guy in the area) and he couldnt help me get anywhere. since it wont boot into safe mode, or let you log in as anything, youre screwed. his best advice was to FRO NOW ON keep a ghosted copy of my system *sigh*

dont bother wasting your time trying to fix it, reinstall xp over your current install. it will leave your software installed and such, but youll have to update everything windows (DX, SP1 etc)

i spent an hour trying to find a way to get around the problem, but in an hour you can have windows reinstalled and going, so i decided not to waste any more time trying to fix it.

sucks eh?
