Windows XP Home - log in problem on boot up.

I've been using 98 forever and have only had XP for a couple weeks now so I'm unfamiliar with a lot of its stuff.

I turn on the computer and it does its normal boot up stuff and this window pops up and states something to the effect of, "The system could not log you on. Somthing about password incorrect...case sensitive...yada yada yada with an OK button." Well, this little window only appears for a second or two, barely enough time to click the "OK" button and not enough time to even read the whole message.

If I click the OK button it goes to the log in screen for my user. I type in my password for my user, only user on the system, and all is well with the world.

If I miss clicking the OK button it goes to a pretty blue screen - not the screen of death - and shows,"Windows is starting up..." and then it does nothing. The "Windows is starting up" stays there forever and ever and ever. I then have to hit the restart button and not miss the OK button during the start up process the next time.

SO, how do I fix this little glitch I somehow managed to get?

I looked in "user accounts" in control panel and I have 3 User names.
1) Administators ------ Group Administrators
2) ASPNET ------------- Group Users
3) Owner --------------- Administrators

Now the only one I set up was Owner which I set a password for and which windows goes to when I click the OK button in time. What is the Administrators name and the ASPNET name? Can I delete these two?

Control Panel, User Accounts .. make sure Use Welcome Screen & Use Fast User Switching are not checked

You might also want to set Start Menu to Classic View .. as to the other accounts ASPNET is used by
MS Visual Basic ... not sure about the account in Group Admin .. are you running xp pro ? ?

Both were checked so I unchecked them and restarted. The window still popped up but this time it stayed so I could actually read the whole thing and click OK without hurrying. Then had to log in with my password.

It read:
The system could not log you on. Make sure your user name and domain are correct, they type your password again. Letters in password must be typed using the correct case.

It seems to be trying to automatically log me on on start up, which is what it should be doing and what it had been doing for the past week I've had this computer, but the password saved is not working. Hmmm, where is the password saved for startup and how do I change it?

Start, Run, type in "control userpasswords2" (no quotes) ... you can change a few things
there including autologin

See link: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/Autologon.htm

The link you provided worked! Went into TweakUI and was able to set the auto login startup password there. How it got changed to begin with I don't know. Thanks for the help!!

Maybe I should go buy a book on XP.
