Windows XP home installtion too easy?

I had to clean re-install Windows XP for my friend but I realized that it is not so easy to install..it tooks 2 days to install...So much installation problems, several re-boot problems, etc. I told my friend to get Windows 2k but he wants XP easier for his wife to use.

If you're having problems install XP on the system 2k isnt going to be any better. Something is wrong with the hardware on that computer, or the CD itself. XP is far superior to 2k in an almost limitless amount of ways.

in the past I installed XP over win98se until his wife messed up so he asked for my help to fresh install over again was hard work for two days. XP refused to install if the hard drive is bad with sectors, etc.

Hardly. There are a decent number of improvements that are really noticable like FUS and the new ugly themes and some that aren't so noticable like NTFS updates and HT support. But overall the changes were pretty minor, otherwise it would have been a bigger version jump than 5.0 -> 5.1.

XP refused to install if the hard drive is bad with sectors, etc.

Good. That means the drive is dying, it may take weeks or even months but if it's developing bad sectors that means the drive will be dead in the not too distant future.

Another big change that a lot of people miss is the administration side of XP. XP made many changes to make it easier to IT depts to manage the machines remotely. GPOs were also much improved over XP. But overall it's not a HUGE jump.

that is what I told my friend..he does not want to buy another hard drive..right now he has spare 15GB hard drive. His wife does not play games or anything..just online shopping so 15GB is enough for her.

Depends. XP is a lot more stringent in terms of BIOS-level ACPI requirements. W2K not so much. So W2K may install on many older machines, in which XP will not. Since they're almost the same, I would likewise say go W2K instead of XP.

Edit: Oops. Missed the part about the bad sectors on the HD the first time around. G L, you'll need it. 🙂

Geez, tell your friend to just get a new HD already!
Heck, maybe it's still under warranty?

Since he's asking you to help with such a simplistic task as install XP, what makes you think he won't call when the HD craps out?

Stupid stupid stupid!
(not you, your friend)

seems in todays world its easier to get someone else to do it for you, that way they dont have to strain thier brain or THINK. hate it when that happens

He does not know what went wrong so I had to look at it be re install Win XP and it told me not to install with bad sectors.. I gave him advice but he blamed on his wife for mess up. Oh well..as of right now he seems very happy with XP running good for a week so far with 15GB hard drive.

Its that kindof crap that pisses me off, If I was you I would not bother spending any time trying to install XP if its apparently not worth it to the dude to buy a cheap HDD. ERRRR!! tell him to shove it.

That's fine, just tell him not to call you when the thing dies.

I hate it when people don't listen to good advice. One person wanted me to reinstall Win ME because he didn't want to purchase XP. Of course, I was back there within a month, and he luckily decided to go with XP that time.
