Hello,

I just got my new system up and running and started the XP install. After it copys some files and says to reboot, It goes right through the whole set up process again. It asks for my previous version of windows disc to be inserted then asks what partition i want to install on. After i select the partition it says

Caution: A \windows folder already exists that may contain a windows installation. If you continue, the existing windows installation will be overwritten. If i select ( To use the folder and delete the existing Windows installation in it, Press L.) I do so then it just repeats the same process again.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I just got off the line with Windows tech support and they told me its a hardware issue. I've tried using XP full edition and the upgrade and im still getting the same problem. The setup just keeps repeating.

I'm still new to this, its my first build, so bare with me. Should i disable the sata ports in bios that im not using? I'm really stuck and not sure what to do. I really dont want to drop 100+ dollars to have someone else fix it.

If anyone could help, I'd owe you a life debt =P

Nick

Welcome to the forums. Need to list your system specs to help us figure it out, hard to know what to suggest when we don't know what you are running. My guess is that you need to set the hard drive as a bootable device in your BIOS, also guessing you have a SATA drive..otherwise it won't see the hard drive as bootable, so it will keep booting from the CD instead..

You are using an upgrade version of xp.

It keeps finding itself, not an older version of Windows to upgrade.
Either, use a Win98 CD [shove it into the cd drive when it asks you for your previous version], or ME, 2K.

I've been using an old Windows ME disc, It is one of the disc that come with a new dell though could that be the problem? It shouldn't be because i used the same combo to load XP on my PIII 550.

I checked the boot priority in CMOS the Hard Disk is set on first boot device.

Does the ME CD have DELL written all over it?

If so, maybe Dell have hexed the route of an upgrade somehow.

Yes it does have a Dell logo on it, but i dont understand why it'd work on my old PIII 550 and not my new comp ><

I spoke to a local computer store. They told me i need a "clean" CD meaning one that hasnt been installed on a computer before. They said thats most likely the problem.

Can anyone confirm this?

That's BS. Stay away from that outfit.

I would try this.

First step would be to reset your CMOS. Follow the directions as specified in the manual that came with your board. Many manufacturers these days want the battery removed in conjunction with moving a jumper. Again, follow their instructions to the letter.

If this does not work, at the Gigabyte website, check for a newer BIOS file. If there is one available, install it following the instructions to the letter.

If this does not work, download the diagnostic tools from the Seagate site and run them. Also download Memtest and run that.

If this does not work, see if you can borrow a Power Supply from a friend just to try out.
