Windows XP Home and AMD K8 Athlon 64

Hi,
Im wanting to build an Athlon 64 system.
I have a question regarding Windows XP Home.

I read that the Athlon 64 can run in both 32bit and 64bit modes.
Does Windows XP Home SP2 run well with the Athlon in 32bit mode.

And I take it that the only way to run the Athlon 64 in 64bit mode is to have a 64bit Operating Sytem.
Am I right?? Or will the Athlon 64 run in 64bit mode with Windows XP Pro SP2?

Thanks for any help given.

You're right, you'll need a 64bit capable OS, or more specifically AMD-64 capable OS, to run in 64bit more on an Athlon64/Opteron.
And yes, it'll work just fine with XP home, when running a 32 bit OS on an AMD-64 capable CPU it'll run just like any other 32bit processor(well any other IA-32 processor).

My pleasure 🙂

By the way, I lied slightly, there is one difference between AMD64(and compatible) CPU's even under 32bit Windows, they have true W^X capability so long as you're on Sp2 or higher.
IIRC Microsoft calls it DEP, I'm too lazy to remember what everyone calls it, so I just go by the OpenBSD name since it makes sense, and it was the first one I learned 🙂
