Windows XP hates me

When I try to install Freespace2 I get this:

"C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. THe system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows Applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application"

And nothing happens. I've tried all my XP tricks, like Compability Modes, and Copying the CD to the HD, and such. Any suggestions?
