windows xp gives me an error booting up...i cant get it to work

MrDudeMan

Lifer
when i boot up, i get this error

0x0000007B

i can not get into windows at all...i have windows 98 and xp dual booted, but 98 is not the problem. when i select xp from the menu, it hangs and then blue screens with the above error. i dont have any idea what to do to fix this...

i tried using the recovery console and doing fixboot d: since that is where xp is installed, and i tried doing a repair installation but that didnt work either! ahh what do i do!

thanks for that link

how do i go about fixing this stuff though? it tells me what the problem is, but not how to fix it. i think it is a problem with device drivers, i remember installing something that probably screwed up the hard drive/cd-rom device drivers..basically the ATA/ATAPI controller...

how do i go delete all of those device drivers so it will build a new config next time it starts up?

can you boot into safe mode...

if you can then you can try to delete the drivers at safe-mode... and restart your system too see if it'll work

What did you do before this happened?

STOP 7B errors don't "just happen." You made a change. We need to know what that change was.

oh i forgot to retype the error...my other thread got locked, i forgot to add in the info...sorry

i plugged in my CD-ROM while the computer was on and it wouldnt detect it so installed some ATA/ATAPI drivers, and when i restarted, it freezes...

safe mode is a no go

and, before you all say it, i know i am an idiot, i should not have plugged it in while the computer was on, but i was too curious and i could not resist!
