just found some news about Windows XP which was interesting.

MICROSOFT'S ONGOING MISSION to kill its obsolete but still widely used Windows XP operating system has been dealt another blow, as a developer has announced his own unofficial Service Pack that rolls up all missing updates and reenables automatic updating.

Nearly five months have elapsed since the official end of life (EoL) date for Windows XP came and went, yet users are still finding workarounds. Hackers have found a way to convince your computer that it's a till so it will keep working, known as the POSready hack.

I windows 7 service pack 2 would be good as well because i am going to be using windows 7 for a long time if windows 9 sucks.
 
All credit to the person doing it, but just let it die already.

The people who don't care or can't afford to upgrade won't know about this update anyway.
 
LOL, this made the news? People have been making unofficial rollups at ryanvm.net for a long time. Many years ago, before SP3 came out (back when we weren't sure there would be a SP3), there was a very popular post-SP2 rollup there... The success of Windows 7 drained a lot of the interest and demand.

Also, this sort of thing just works for NT 5.x. The servicing model for NT 6.x makes these custom rollups impossible to make.

if anyone here is using the unofficial service pack 4 then i would recommend they ditch microsoft internet explorer v8 and instead use mozilla firefox. the reason i say firefox is because chrome will be retired in 2015 sometime but mozilla will offer windows xp support with firefox. also make sure that you use a great paid antivirus like Kaspersky Lab Support for Windows XP will continue at least until 2018, Webroot Support for Windows XP will be available until at least April 2018 and Bitdefender Support for Windows XP for home user products available until January 2016 and Support for corporate products available until January 2017.

The POSReady hack has worked fine for me. My main computers are all running Windows 7 and Windows 8, but I have a few older machines that I really don't want to upgrade, and other machines that have to stay with Windows XP for testing purposes. So far I've been just installing all the embedded updates, and nothing has broke yet.
 
I'm waiting for MS to start writing in some file checks in to the patches. XPe has a variety of tools, DLLs and applications that are not in XP. Check to see if those are the proper sign MS editions and then make patches fail to install would be interesting. They also may not care.

I would not use XP on an old PC even if you paid me,there is plenty of good Linux distros out there that cover the basics ie online banking,email,browsing,better security with future support etc and all for free .

I would remove XP and install Linux,infact I did that about five years ago on an old PC.


End of the day plenty of better alternatives out there from both Microsoft (ie Win7/8)and Linux ,some cost you nothing so you really have nothing to lose.
