Windows XP freezes on logon...

Loading up Windows XP Pro SP2 on a laptop, it has been running fine for the last six months, now it freezes on the logon.

Laptop POST's, MS Windows splash page with green progress bar goes through just fine, it goes to standard blue screen that says "Welcome" but freezes here instead saying "Windows is starting up..." and it freezes.

I rebooted in safe mode, same thing happens.

Any ideas?

I just ran memtest and the memory is good - this is a Dell Laptop I should add so new hardware was introduced to it.

If a computer won't boot into safe mode, I pretty much assume that XP is corrupted beyond use and a format is in order.

Sometimes it is worth using a repair installation into the same Windows directory:
Boot from the XP cd, and the SECOND time it asks you if you want to repair a previous installation, say yes, and point it to the one (it will give you an option - if it doesn't then format and reinstall) that needs repairing, and let it happen.
