Windows XP freezes at splash screen

I've had windows installed for 4-5 months since i last reformatted, and today when I turn my computer on, it seems fine until it reaches the splash screen (w/ the logo windows xp and loading bar).

The loading bar freezes and 20 seconds later the computer reboots.

I've tried booting in "safe mode," "last good known configuration," and "start windows normally" multiple times and I can't seem to even get to the boot menu or bios.

I have no idea what I can try but any help would be great! Thanks everyone.

ps: last night I turned off the computer by holding in the power button, which I know is bad. Is that what might have caused this?

Your "power button" shutdown may have corrupted some critical Windows files. My guess is that a repair install of Windows will fix it.

i doubt its the power i mean, anecdotally, it could be holding in the button but i do it allll the time - thats my most common form of shutoff.

and yes, i know thats dumb. ive stopped doing it.

Windows boots normally again after the repair- at first I was worried about losing files and such but no errors. Still, I've never had such a major error caused by my power button turn-off. wont do it again-

Thanks for help.
