Here is the scoup. I told a co-worker i could fix her computer. Now you are asking why, and i will tell you becasue she is cute. Believe me or not, its how i tell the story. Anyway here is the problem.

I get as far as the windows splash screen. After that i get quick blue screen that i cant even read becasue its literally up there for .2 seconds. I checked the temps an everything falls within the acceptable range by a long shot. I have chkdsk the hard drive through the sub-par windows recovery console. But that just give me a, "The volume appears to contain one or more uncroverable problems." And just quits.

When i try to get the directory contents of the C drive, i get a, "An error occurred during directory enumeration."

Now, formatting is not an option becasue there is a lot of important data. I dont want to pull out the hard drive and put it into my computer in fear of getting a virus.

So i guess what i am asking is that does anyone know about a disk checking tool that i can run in dos that would actually scan and repair the drive.

Any help besides, "dood, scandisk doesnt come with xp" would be appreicated. Oh, and quoting and making fun of me for pre-empting neffing isnt appricated. :-d

custom built or not the hard drive was manufactured by someone. Therefore there is a maufacturers utility out there...look at the drive and see who made it.

Yeah I think to put it as a slave on your comp may not be wisest...maybe having an old system hanging around the house as a safe box is not a bad idea...theoretically if there was nothing on your safe box but os, av software...etc one could scan the drive as a slave and try to treat anything found. also I know my Norton disk allows scanning from the cd?

My 2¢ worth is that I'm not worried about my system catching viruses from the slave drive from it merely being present, unless my system goes and boots from it  If you have some modern, updated, properly-configured antivirus software, then you can lob a no-holds-barred antivirus scan at the drive before trying to browse it, and even run a couple of online scans at TrendMicro and Panda for second and third opinions if you want to. The goal being of course to simply rescue her data files. :)

:lips: ~ Dufman, you're mah hero!

depending on how 'cute' she is ;), i'd consider the freezer trick as a last-ditch effort. that is, if you're sure the drive is shot. g/l

If she's that cute, then you might want to spend the bucks and get Steve Gibson's drive utility called Spinrite. If it can't fix the drive, chances are it can't be fixed. At the least you should be able to pull files from it if it works at all.

http://www.grc.com/default.htm

It would be a good utility for you to have, regardless.
