Windows XP: "Found New Hardware" after REMOVING a device.

I am going to sell my M-Audio PCI audio interface, so a few days ago, I went to the device manager, clicked "uninstall" on the device, and then shutdown and removed it. Now, every time I boot up, the Hardware Wizard says it wants to install a "Multimedia Audio Controller". Sometimes, this window pops up unexpectedly when I am in the middle of something and is really annoying. I have tried uninstalling the drivers in Add/Remove Programs, and I have tried uninstalling an disabling it in Device Manager. No matter what, "Multimedia Audio Controller keeps popping up Device Manager.

How do I get rid of this?

This is weird. You physically pulled the card? Any chance your motherboard has on-board sound that was masked by the add-in board? Windows thinks it found something, if you let it install drivers does it?

Do you have onboard audio enabled or set to auto? It may be trying to install drivers for that.

I had an m-audio and I removed it when it finally died after 5+ years of serious use. Uninstalling the driver was all I needed to do.

Yes, I have onboard sound. But the weird thing is, in the device manager, my M-Audio card was called "Multimedia Audio Device". And, before I installed the card, my onboard sound was referred to as "Realtek audio something". Now, it is detecting "Multimedia Audio Device". So, I assume it is something to do with the card I took out. CONFUSED!!!

Multimedia Audio card is a placeholder which should get updated with the device after it's identified. Like I asked, did you let it install the drivers or did you abort it (or where drivers not found?)

Just passing through and thought I would throw this out there...

windows\setupapi.log will show all the hardware related events that have happened. It is a log that stretches all the way back to first install and tells when a device was detected/removed what drivers were found and loaded and all that.

It's some level 400 stuff but you should be able to get some useful info out of it.

Good luck!
