My university gives out free MS stuff (oses and programming tools) to CS majors, but I think your talking about something else.

yeah i could have sworn i read somewhere that if you're a student you can get XP for cheap, i'm not sure how. like if you have to buy from your campus store or what. but i know i heard this...

Educational versions I believe. Very common for MS software. Yes, they are cheaper. The deal is that you cannot resell the software and that fact alone makes the retail value a whole lot less. You also need to be a student, of course but more often than not you can buy the stuff online.

however you can not upgrade from student versions. for example you can buy student office for like 180 but you cant then upgrade student office to whatever is next like office longhorn or XP2005 or whatever it will be.

Univ of Miami gave away free Microsoft products (office 2003, xp, etc) online... just enter in your student ID and you coudl download ISOs with a cd key.

If you're at a public university you can buy MS software from your school bookstore for very cheap, i.e. XP Pro for $15

uh hu I guess at columbia. Out here in CA the state is broke. You get about what you get from newegg.
