I installed RedHat Linux a few hours ago as a dual boot with Windows XP Home. After installing RedHat, whenever I try to boot into Windows, I get the following error:
"
STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Session Manager Initialization system process terminaed unexpectedly with a status of 0xc000003a (0x00000000 0x000000)
The system has been shut down.
"

Someone please help me! I'm stuck with Linux until I fix this problem, and I don't want to lose any of the information in Windows.:(

Mods, can you please move this to os or tech support? Thanks.

And I already tried booting off of the install CD and pressing r, and it brings up the recovery console. What should I do there?

I don't know what XP does but it jerks you around with dual boots somehow. I haven't had success installing a second boot after XP, only installing the other one first, and then XP.

Just go for a reinstall. It will detect your existing Windows config and ask you if you want to repair it or reinstall a fresh config. Just choose repair (this is after it asks if you want to repair it in the console mode) It will save your original config and repair or replace the files that are FUBARED. I do this everythine I swap out a motherboard that has a different chipset.

As I said above, when I go to repair, it starts the recovery console, so I need to know what to do once I'm there.

Also, when I do try to reinstall on the same partition, it shows the partition with Windows as an OS/2 partition (or something like that), and says that the only way that I can install on that partition is to delete it.

Don't try to repair it in the console more. Just ignore it when it asks. It will then go into setup and detect your Windows already installed.

Hmm haven't run across that yet. You might want to checl MS's Knowledge base for that answer

Help me!!! Also, I tried posting this on Microsoft's support newsgroup, but the web browsers that I have on my Linux partition don't work with their newsgroups site.

I think that my problem may have something to do with the windows partition. Are there any good partition managers for Linux?

Did you back everything up before you installed Linux. I ask this because you are more than likely screwed. If you do manage your way out, please let me know how you did it.

No backups. If I can't figure out what to do, then I'll try to access my windows partition through Linux. I'll let you know if I figure this out.

Can someone post something about this on the Microsoft newsgroups for me since I can't access the in Linux? It would be great if someone could. Thanks!

edit: I was able to post something about this on the microsoft newsgroups from my other computer.

Well guess what? After over five hours, I finally got it working!!!!!!!:Q That was a big waste of time, considering that what I did to fix it (once I knew what to do) took less than 5 minutes.

So I guess I'll tell you what I did. Somehow my Windows XP NTFS partition became a hidden partition, which is why my computer couldn't load Windows. I tried the partition manager on the windows XP cd, which was a terrible partition manager. So, then I put in my Redhat linux cd, and started the install process. In the install process, it asks which partition(s) to install linux on, and a partition manager! So in that partition manager (actually, it gives 3 options of how to partition it; I had to chose to format with fdisk). Unlike the microsoft fdisk, the linux version doesn't require a reformat. I chose the hidden NTFS partition, and had fdisk convert it from a hidden ntfs partition to a non hidden NTFS partition. Then it worked!

Thanks to all of you who tried (unsuccessfully:() to help me.

Ok so when I thought that I converted the partition to an NTFS partition, but according to Partition Magic, it was actually converted to a "NT Stripe/Vol Set". Is it okay to leave it like that, or should I try to convert it to NTFS somehow? Windows still says that the drive is NTFS, and it seems to work, so I'm planning on leaving it how it is. If you think that I should convert it, then how should I go about doing that?
