Windows XP Fails to Boot

Alright I'm running XP service pack 2, and my computer has been perfectly fine for the past year or so. However tonight I was unpluging/plugging some speakers from my sound card, and then my computer froze while playing a abrupt noise over the speakers. I rebooted, and my computer gets past the Windows XP load screen (with the moving bar), but afterwards the screen remains blank but nothing happens at all.

Safe mode works however (which I am in right now), and I've tried system restore with no luck. Any help would be appreciated, because reformating would definetely not be cool!

Thanks.

the obvious thing is to try without the sound card
you may have fried the card, possibly the voltage supply to the pci bus.
