Okay,
I have searched a bit on the forum for a fix to this problem and haven't found one. I did find a workaround and so I am posting just in case anyone else is searching for help on this problem. And of course if anyone has feedback on FIXING this, that would be great too.
The problem was with a new installation of Windows XP. My system contained a new SATA hard drive, one DVDRW configured as a master on IDE. One CDRW configured as slave on same IDE channel. My remaining IDE channel was disconnected as this is where my old hard drive had been located.
After booting with the XP installation CD and letting it copy files over (including SATA drivers) the system would reboot as per usual. Following this reboot the system would hang at the XP logo with the logo faded out.
Sometimes, it would get past that screen and find the devices and install all the drivers. Upon THAT reboot I would definitely get the faded logo screen.
When I reconnected my old IDE drive and disconnected the SATA the system booted just fine. Plug in the SATA and the IDE and fail, fail, fail. Usually with invalid operating system types of messages.
The "fix" so far has been to disconnect one of my IDE optical drives. Either one, it didn't matter. If I tried both of them I would get the faded logo and it would eventually load Windows after 5-10 minutes. However the Master DVDRW would not be available. It still operates this way as of now.
Also, I did create a slipstreamed copy of Windows XP with Service Pack 2. With that I did get past all of the installation problems. My only problem after that was the long startup with the faded logo and no DVDRW.
Search the board for directions on creating a slipstreamed XP. It was a BIG help. Good luck and let me know if you have encountered this and found a fix.
