Windows XP explorer modification possible?

What would it take to write a Windows explorer add-on or modify windows explorer to show more details about file transfers? Also, it would be nice to add a resume function or 'hash comparison' function when a file is copied.

Like, while windows is showing the goofy little transferring file image and time remaining, it could also show current transfer speed, and current MB of total MB or something like that..
