Windows XP explorer crashes when searching

Whenever I use the search function in explorer (F3) and search "all of my computer" and not a specific folder, the shell crashes (explorer) and taskbar disappears, etc.

I have to go and close any active explorer folder windows, ctrl-alt-del to task manger and re-launch the shell by running explorer

not sure why it crashes only when I search the whole computer. I can search any individual folder or disk drive without it crashing

any ideas ?
